“Forest Grove closed and I was transferred to Washington Elementary. During my last year there Rappahannock County schools were integrated. I taught a fourth grade unit along with Dorothy Butler of Sperryville and we were housed in the small building formerly used as an agriculture class shop.”
“WE BOTH learned a lot. What good friends we grew to be and how good it was for us. Awkward at first—but good for her and good for me. We just shed the skin and went on from there,” said Miss Elsie.
The completely consolidated Rappahannock County Elementary School emerged in 1968. This is the single elementary school in the county and houses about 800 students. Miss Elsie felt the most negative aspect of consolidation is the necessity of extremely regimented and supervised activities. It allows little or no opportunity for children socializing on different grade levels.
