The theme of modern agriculture has been on the “green revolution,”- to turn previously unusable tracts of land into the nation’s breadbasket, all accomplished only through dependence on petroleum products. Agriculture continues to be subsidized to a greater and greater degree with fossil fuels. For every one calorie of food consumed by Americans., 20 calories have been used to produce it, Clark said. The key to real energy conservation in this area is to encourage more small farms, Clark said, to rely on plant diversity, not pesticides, to defeat the insects, and smaller crop areas that don’t have to be harvested by huge machines.

WILSON CLARK is also not convinced that the development of nuclear power is the panacea many of its boosters claim it to be. The federal government, many public utilities such as Vepco, and several corporations are advocating nuclear power as the ultimate solution to the energy shortage, Clark said.

They claim the development of nuclear power will mean the United States will no longer have to import foreign fossil fuels. But the development of nuclear power is no solution, only a perpetuation of the same problem in a different guise, Clark said. And in addition, nuclear power, specifically breeder reactors, will bring about environmental and health hazards not yet dreamed of, he said.
