FANNING BAUMGARDNER has resigned as Rappahannock County’s assistant zoning administrator, effective June 12. Baumgardner would not disclose the contents of the letter he sent to each of the Supervisors and would not give the reasons for his resignation. “Whatever is going to come out about it, I’d rather have come fi^m them,” he said. But it is understood that Baumgardner’s resignation was prompted, at least in part, by a conflict within the zoning office, specifically concerning the proposed development of the ski area.
Owners of the bankrupt ski area have petitioned the court for permission to sell the property. Prospective buyers of the larger tract have indicated they want to develop the ski area into a yearround commercial recreation project.
Baumgardner and Commonwealth’s Attorney George Davis reviewed the prospective buyers’ plans for the ski area and advised them that they would have to apply for a special use permit and present a site development plan, as required by county ordinances. The use permit would require a public hearing.
It was said that county zoning administrator Evan McNear, who is a part owner of the ski area, disagreed, although he denies these reports.
