Farmers need help
THE ADMINISTRATION and Congress both finally seem to be getting the word—family farms in America need help, if they are to be preserved and not vanish from the face of the earth. And if they aren’t saved, we’ll all be in trouble. Huge, land-wasteful, inefficient—but profitable, because of their vast scale and mechanization—commercial farming will never supplant the family farm, either as a source of quality food or as the most efficient producer of food and fiber.
The hearings held before Congress last week on one possible aid in the effort to save family farms in America has now been followed by an announcement from the White House that President Ford, too, is interested in some method of easing the impact of estate taxes on farm families. It seems that this is an idea whose time has come, and let’s hope it arrives as soon as possible, and in as beneficial a form as can be concocted.
