As a second, less immediate step, the Committee decided to recommend conversion of the summer kitchen, adjacent to the jail, into office space, also proposed for the Zoning Administrator and Registrar to share. When the offices move to the refurbished summer kitchen, their vacated room in the courthouse would be allotted to the Commonwealth’s Attorney and Sheriff.
“With a little imagination and very little cost, it (the summer kitchen) could be made into an attractive office,” said Fanning Baumgardner. He estimated the cost of renovation at approximately $3,000, adding that the building is just a shell and needs a heating system, insulation, floor and ceiling.
“This way, we won’t have to build anything and won’t spoil the looks of the courthouse area,” Pete Luke agreed.
IN THEIR letter to the Supervisors, the Committee acknowledged that the Health Department is seriously overcrowded and recommended that the Department seek “additional adjoining space or a larger, more suitable location.”
