A PLAN to “greatly increase the efficiency of the fire and rescue service in Rappahannock County” has been announced by Carl James of the Volunteer Fire and Rescue Association.
“Some fire departments and rescue squads within Rappahannock County in the past have experienced various problems in receiving emergency calls,” said James. “In an attempt to create an effective system to better serve the local communities, a committee from the association, working with all the local departments, has devised a plan which it feels greatly increases the efficiency of die fire and rescue service in Rappahannock County.”
According to James, the plan is threefold, as follows:
“1. Each company has a first priority area based on the distance between each fire department.
“2. A five minute time lapse between the original call, before the next company is dispatched. This- means if you placed a call to your local fire department and if some type problem is encountered preventing response from that department, after five minutes of your call the next nearest company will be sent.
“3. On structual, i.e., houses, barns, sheds, etc., two companies will automatically respond.
What this means as far as fire and rescue protection, said James is: “1. A quicker response time; 2. Closest company will respond; 3. Better coverage by two-company response; 4. Better utilization of fire and rescue apparatus; 5. With two-company response on structural fires, apparatus will be left in the local station in case of second call.”
THE County has been divided into six areas because there are six departments and the dividing lines are half way between stations by distance by various routes. The following areas represent the following departments:
Area 1—Washington Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
Area 2—Sperryville Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
Area 3—Amissville Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
Area 4—Flint Hill Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
Area 5—Castleton Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
Area 6—Chester Gap Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
