THOMAS JEFFERSON was no fan of royalty, but two centuries later the British Monarch has received a warm and enthusiastic welcome in his beloved Old Dominion. Queen Elizabeth n was fairly regaled with southern hospitality when she spent five hours of her busy Bicentennial visit touring Charlottesville and Monticello.
They had been sweeping the royal red carpet for months at the University of Virginia where an admiring throng estimated at more than 18,000 thrilled at the Royal presence. At a brief ceremony on the steps of Cabell Hall, Her Majesty exchanged Bicentennial birthday gifts with Governor Mills Godwin. He received for the Commonwealth a devisal of the coat of arms used by the Virginia Company of London, and later by the Colony and Dominion of Virginia. The Queen in turn accepted a set Page 2
