Supervisors, and from what he says, it might be possible to finance such an undertaking without a great commitment of local funds. With the state as a paying tenant afterwards, clearing up any construction costs could become a relatively painless proposition.

BUT the main thing to applaud at this point is the recognition that there is no need to embark on a grandiose project of public construction. Neighboring Fauquier County failed to grasp this point, and the huge, costly, over-sized county office building and court house erected in Warrenton remains as a monument to unwise over-planning. And as is always the case in such situations, the county’s bureaucracy is determined to fill up that huge building, at any cost—to the taxpayers, that is.

Thank goodness Rappahannock harbors no such delusions of governmental grandeur—or at least, not to the extent that anyone is willing to plunge their neighbors into long-range debt for the sake of it.D
