Sightseers on Skyline Drive out to admire the beauty of fall foliage at its peak caught an unexpected taste of winter on Sunday. Shenandoah Park authorities reported six inches of snow at Big Meadows and closed the Drive from 1 p.m. on Sunday until approximately 1 p.m. Monday.
Three inches of snow had accumulated by Sunday afternoon, standing 66 cars between Panorama and Big Meadows. Visitors were caught in their automobiles, some for overnight, while Park authorities worked to pull vehicles from ditches and clear roads.
Park authorities reported no serious accidents as a result of the snow fall. “We feel very fortunate...We only had a few dented fenders and bumpers,” said Mrs. Campbell, spokeswomen for the Park Superintendent’s office.
Despite the snow, acting chief ranger Bob Johnson said that the spectacular color show put on by the Shenandoah Park trees was expected to continue. At higher elevations, foliage reached its peak last weekend and is not holding well but colors are still good on the trails below the snow line, according to the ranger.
