In an interview with The Fauquier Democrat published in last week’s edition, Republican candidate for governor John N. Dalton referred questions about a mail campaign in his behalf to a prior interview he’d held Oct. 1 in Culpeper.
In the later interview, Dalton declined to respond directly when asked if he supported an Arlington group which put out a fund raising letter terming his Democratic opponent Hemw Howell an “erratic radical'* and accusing Howell of advocating strict gun control laws and of supporting busing of Virginia school children to the District of Columbia.
Since the record showed that many of the accusations were mis-statements of the record, Dalton was asked if he disavowed the letter. Except for repeating that it “was a letter stronger than I would have written,” Dalton would say only that he wished the fund raising and fund distribution were under his Dalton Committee’s control.
Although he offered a transcript of the earlier interview to The Democrat, two requests from the newspaper for a copy were unproductive until after last week’s edition went to press.
A copy was finally received here from Dalton Committee headquarters in Richmond last Wednesday. Labeled, “Transcript of news conference with Lt. Gov. John N. Dalton and US Rep. J. Kenneth Robinson, Culpeper, Va., Oct. 1,” the pertinent references read:
