However, Lane said, he will have some influence over criminal laws in the state as a member of the state Crime Commission. Through this position, he said, he would be involved in the area of law enforcement and law change.
Lane called for a strong task force to study the use of hard drugs in the state. “If we solve the problem, we may cut down on the number of crimes.”
He said that he supports mandatory sentences for law breakers and feels that the privilege of plea bargaining should be denied in dealing with serious crimes.
Running for Attorney General, he said, is difficult because many people do not understand the office. That office is strictly defined by law to represent the legal affairs of the people of the state.
After four years, he said, the people will be able to judge his performance in office by looking “at the efficient way” he ran the state’s legal affairs. “People will know whether or not they have gotten fair and just representation. And they will see an aggressive nature in the consumer division. These are all measures of an Attorney General’s performance.”
