In explaining his support of Howell, Lane told of his experiences as chairman of the House Appropriations Committee for a number of years. He said that many of the liberals who want to spend money suddenly become conservative when they are appointed to the Appropriations Committee and realize "that the responsibility is on their shoulders.”
“I think that would apply here,” he said of Howell. “I think he would be fiscally responsible. When the responsibility lies on his shoulders, he will accept that responsibility.”
As Attorney General, Lane said he would be in position to do “a lot for consumers, especially in the area of utility rates.” Lane said he would like to see the state attorney’s office do more in the way of investigation and presenting evidence in rate cases before the State Corporation Commission. The utilities, he said, have the funds "for expensive attorneys and consultants.”
“I want to give the same power to the consumer,” Lane said.
Lane said that if he is elected he will not lobby the General Assembly, which he considers would be in conflict with his official duties.
