Reports from resident highway engineer Don Askew indicate that the bridge on Route 1001 will be reopened by late February or early March, “barring any major weather problems.”
In a telephone interview on Thursday. Askew said the highway, department's Culpeper yard should have 16 concrete beams ready by the end of January or early February. The concrete pieces will be used to replace both the steel beams underneath the bridge and the wood deck. Askew said the decision to use concrete instead of wood for the flooring was the result of complaints at the recent bridge hearing regarding the noise of the floor boards rattling.
He noted that the repairs will bring the bridge up to highway department standards on legal load limit. The bridge was previously capable of carrying only eight tons. With the new concrete beams and deck, it will hold approximately 20 tons.
