Poetry Contest
Students from Virginia’s 390 high schools have the opportunity to discover language, develop poetry writing skills and win top prizes in the 1980 poetry contest sponsored by the English department at Virginia Tech, in conjunction with the local site of the Virginia Writing Project, Title IV-C.
First prize will be $100; second, $50; and third, $25. Four $10 prizes will be awarded for fourth place, and honorable mentions will be made as deserved.
The top three prize winners will be invited to read their poems on WBRATV, for release to Public Broadcasting Service stations throughout Virginia. Winners also will be invited to appear on "Panorama.v tT talk show hosted by Polly Ayers of WDBJ-TV. Roanoke.
The deadline for submissions is March 15, and winners will be notified April 15. The television programs will air sometime in May.
Contest rules limit poems to one per student, with no restrictions on length, form or subject matter. Entries should be typed and double spaced on 8V2 x 11 paper, or neatly handwritten. The student’s name, age. grade, home address and telephone number should appear on each entry with the name and address of his high school. The signature of the sponsoring English teacher must appear below the poem.
