Those of us who heat with wood know the advantages of using dry (seasoned) fuelwood. Burning green wood is OK if that's all that you have available. However, green fuelwood is harder to ignite, will gunk up your chimney faster, and produces less available heat than dry wood. (Any heat that is used to evaporate the fuelwood’s .moisture ‘ content is unavailable for space heating.)
You can hasten -the seasoning process in sfeveral ways: (I) Stack the wood in a place exposed to wind and sun. (2) Protect it from rain and snow by covering the top layer with plastic or ol<^ boards.’ (3) Retfp fhe botfon^ layer off the ground. (4) Split the wood into small pieces.
The solar wood dryer shown here will hasten the drying process even more. These simple plans were developed by VPI&SU ahd the Virginia Division of Forestry. If you have to buy all of the material, cost will be about $50.
