Gov John. N. Dalton vetoed the latest House of Delegates redistricting plan Monday and indicated that a single-member district plan would be a better way of achieving districts that are both compact and “consistently" maintain communities of interest.
Dalton's press secretary, Charles J- Davis 111, said that the governor has not ruled out plans containing multimember districts. But Davis added. "Certainly, he leans toward single-member districts.”
Davis also said the governor believes the latest plan is a “step backwards” from a plan the General Assembly approved earlier this year, since the latest plan, approved last Tuesday, contains fewer single-member districtrthan the earlier plan.
