Older homes, like Oak Hill, were generally built of “balloon construction,” with hollow walls that rise from basement to attic. Without any firebreaks inside the walls, once a fire gets inside it climbs the natural flue created by the wall into the attic. Then, it spreads across the eaves, engulfing the entire structure in a matter of minutes.
The age of the house, Asst. Chief Burke said, meant that much of the structural wood was quite dry and easily kindled, adding to the speed of the fire’s spread.
He said that firefighters responded as soon as the alarm was sounded, but one member who lives in Sperryville said when he left his house about two minutes later all he saw was a massive fireball on the hill. “All he saw was flames — he said there was nothing he could even distinguish as a house,” Asst. Chief Burke said. “I could see the glow in the sky when I left my house in Woodville.”
