Virginia Apple Growers Association, said Virginia’s growers have had a “bad five years.” Production in that period decreased 50 percent, she said. What makes that figure impressive is that 1987 was one of the best years, not in quality but in number of apples.
Ms. Griffin said Virginia’s 1990 crop is estimated at 5 million bushels, 35 percent lower than the 7.7 million produced last year.
Virginia growers, along with their counterparts in West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Maryland, all reported reduced crops, as did the growers in Tennessee, North Carolina and Alabama.
