Theatre’s talents
Ki Theatre will present “Paths to the Edge,” a program of new stories and new music by two teams of artists from Ki Theatre and Trapezoid.
The program will be presented on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 8 p.m., in Washington, Virginia’s historic Town Hall on Gay Street. It features Julie Portman, director of Ki Theatre, Paul Reisler, director of the music group Trapezoid, and Bob Read, composer, arranger, and member of Trapezoid.
Julie and Paul will open the program with two true life stories that unfold in a rich environment of music composed by Reisler. The stories, “Little Bit, Know Something” and “Katie Malone” are based on the childhood experiences of a Native American medicine man from British Columbia, and a daughter’s reflections discovering her mother’s wedding dress.
Julie and Paul are Rappahannock County residents. Throughout the year, they tour nationally and internationally as a duo. They rehearse, create, and premiere their performance work at Washington’s Town Hall.
Their work has been described as “a fascinating fusion of storytelling, live music and theatre.” Most recently, they were featured at the 18th National Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, Tennessee, attended by more than 15,000 people from across the United States.
Mr. Reisler and Bob Read are currently working on a duo album of original instrumental music for Narada/MCA Records. At Saturday’s premiere performance, as part of “Paths to the Edge,” they will perform some of the music created for the new release.
Both Reisler and Read are key figures in the music group Trapezoid.
Bob Read’s instruments include flute, clarinet and saxophone as well as percussion and keyboard. Mr. Read works with Trapezoid and also with Ki Theatre as a composer. Besides running his own recording studio, he composes for a broad range of choreographers and creates scores of film.
Paul Reisler has been active in every phase of music including songwriting, composing, producing records, directing festivals, teaching and instrument making. For the past 15 years he has toured throughout North America and Japan performing in over 1600 concerts, workshops and festivals.
