Christmas
food drive
for needy

This year's downturn in the economy has produced a need for even more assistance from the community in meeting the needs of some county families during the holidays, according to the Department of Social Services.
Each year, the department sponsors a canned food drive to provide Christmas baskets, complete with turkeys and all the trimmings, to needy families around the county. Last year, enough food and cash donations were collected to make 55 baskets.
“We would like to do at least that many,” said social worker Marie Davis. “The need is even greater this year, with the economy, and layoffs and jobs lost.”
Mrs. Davis said the department is looking for canned and boxed non-perishable food items for the baskets. In addition, she said, personal health items like toothpaste, paper items, razors, soap and other similar things will be appreciated.
