To the editor:
In the Nov. 22 issue of the Rappahannock News, there were two separate articles printed regarding the transitional state of the Gay Street Theatre here in Washington. The first article was written about RAAC’s decision to vacate the theatre and the second article was a press release I submitted to the newspaper outlining our company’s plans in the theatre.
We here at Olde Towne Theatre would like to clarify a few points that may have confused some of the area residents.
Due to the fact that the articles ran in the same issue, on the same page and in the same column, people may draw the conclusion that the articles are in some way related. It may appear that Olde Towne Theatre was responsible for RAAC’s decision to leave the Gay Street Theatre.
As RAAC can certainly attest to, this is not the case. RAAC’s debate over the upcoming lease renewal was happening long before our company located to Washington. The timing of our move in relation to the major changes that have happened with RAAC are in no way related.
RAAC and the theatre’s owner, Wendy Weinberg, failed to reach agreement with regard to the new lease and other conflicts that the two parties had. We booked our first show to open March of ’91 through RAAC back in September and have been working very closely with them
