Jayvees beat
Luray at home
The JV basketball team lost to George Mason, 50-38, last week before bouncing back to beat Luray, 54-45. Against George Mason, said Coach Tim Corder, “They didn’t look that great—we just looked terrible.” Jason Settle had 11 points and Ray Atkins had six. Rappahannock lost much of its rebounding strength when Hunter Foster broke his thumb in the first half. He was lost for three weeks.
In winning the Luray home opener, Shawn Jordan had 22, Shane Lambert scored 12 with 7 rebounds, Ray Atkins had six and Paul Brown scored six with six rebounds. The Panthers led 22-17 at the half and never let up.
Volleyballers
continue winning
The varsity volleyball team continued its storybook season this week with a tough, come-from-behind win at Brentsville Dec. 19. The Lady Panthers won the first game, 15-10, lost the second, 7-15, then won the third and deciding game, 153.
Coach Paul Paratore said the team had to shrug off a lapse in concentration early on. “In volleyball, if ] you’re not in the game with your J head, I don’t care what your skill ? level, you’re going to get beat,” he i said.
He said the team showed more competitive fire in the third game than they’ve had all season. “It was the first time they’ve been upset out there,” said the coach.
The squad has off until Jan. 6, but during practices over Christmas break Coach Paratore said he will be making some adjustments.
“I’m really optimistic for the rest of the season,” he said.
The jayvee team lost to Clarke’s jayvee, 3-15,15-1, 5-15.
Coach Paratore said despite the loss that game constituted a “big step forward” for the Lady Panthers.
“I. think I’ve got some good kids there,” he said.
