probable cause in that situation, and while I have no practical objection to the roadblocks, and I recognize the purpose they serve, nevertheless I am troubled, on principle, by any precedent that erodes the provisions of the Bill of Rights.
He explained that a recent Supreme Court decision approved the roadblocks, providing for a number of stringent requirements to reduce the possibility of abuse by enforcement officials, and he took the time to explain those requirements to me in detail.
These, presumably, are things that any law enforcement officer should know, and I am still uneasy about roadblocks; nevertheless, it gives me a warm feeling to know that in our county we have a sheriff who is not only aware of the legal constraints of procedures, but who also understands and is sensitive to the reasoning behind those constraints, and who will take the time to explain them. I thought this was worth sharing with your readers, especially as we celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Bill of Rights.
