the Rappahannock-Rapidan Emergency Services Council. Washington Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company will receive $20,000 in a 50-50 match for a basic life support ambulance to replace the old unit that has been broken down for much of the past year. “This is entirely state money that was appropriated for this purpose by the General Assembly,” Rosson reported. In addition, the county’s fire and rescue association was awarded an $11,600 grant to assist in procuring a disptach communications system. The money is allocated as an 80-20 percnent hardship match.:
The Piedmont Environmental Council Board of Directors voted at its December meeting to activate the Piedmont Land Revolving Fund, which PEC describes as “a bold new tool for preserving the landscape of Piedmont Virginia.” A drive is underway to raise an initial $500,000 with which to commence operations. The purpose of the Fund is to purchase key Piedmont tracts threatened with conversion to unsuitable uses, and to resell those properties to private parties after easements or covenants have been placed on them. The primary focus of the Fund will be the preservation of farmland in strategic areas. Already, PEC has received $100,000 for the Fund.
