field Country Day School, with about 70 students. By the end of the year a major issue—who owes thousands of dollars in loans—was still before Rappahannock Circuit Court Judge Thomas Home. The libel suit against Mrs, Lynn, filed by Warrenton attorney Rob Miller, is also pending.
The only good news out of the whole controversy was that both schools appear to be off to a good start—Wakefield CDS has even been given donations totalling in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and the Marshall school reports high morale and expects enrollment to climb next year.
The drought that hit much of the surrounding area this summer was not as severe in Rappahannock, so 29 county farmers participated in a donation of hay to Clarke County farmers. The donation was organized by the Rappahannock Farmers Association and the Clarke Extension Office.
In October county property owners were up in arms over their assessments, which increased on average about 80 percent. The Board of Assessors heard a record number of appeals, but an unofficial study by the Rappahannock News showed that actual sales in October were only about three percent below assessed values.
The county also has a presidential candidate. Former U.S. Sen. Eugene McCarthy announced this fall that he was running for president on a campaign that was designed to attack President Bush.
