The Library Board learned that the library is facing a $30,000 operating deficit this fiscal year.
Treasurer Helen Platt said she had about $4,700 left in the operating budget and December bills would absorb that. She said the library would receive $3,200 in January as a quarterly payment from the state <jvith one more such payment due. She added that the state was talking about cutting back.
Mrs. Platt said expenses had been running about $6,000 per month. Some of these expenses were for one-time purchases such as chairs for the meeting room and a computer, but most of the extra expenses have been for utilities, cleaning service and salaries.
“So, how can we cut back?” Chairman William Young asked.
Member Grace Sims suggested that the library is open 47 hours per week while only 40 hours are required by the state. The board decided to cut Wednesday hours. The library has been open from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. on Wednesdays. It will be closed Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
