Mrs. Coxe’s Tavern in Washington opened quietly and without fanfare at 11 a.m. on Monday.

Members of the town’s Architectural Review Board visited the site last Friday and gave their final approval of the building.

Lunch was served to a mostly local crowd; everyone seemed anxious to check out the new restaurant and sample the food. The owners of the tavern, Fran and Charlie Eldred, were obviously delighted to finally have their restaurant open, greeting their first customers by taking their photograph and then seating them in the main dining room.

An extensive menu was offered, with five appetizers, three soups, a few salads, and several sandwiches and entrees.

Appetizer choices included homemade sausages with a spicy fruit chutney and a smoked trout plate served with sweet com chow chow.

Com and crab chowder proved to be a popular choice, and the spinach salad with country ham, marinated mushrooms, croutons and parmesan cheese sounded especially tasty.

Sandwiches and entree selections are sure to please meat-eaters and vegetarians alike; a vegetable plate of four vegetables can be ordered for a mere $3.95.

Seven desserts were on the bill of fare, including a mixed berry cobbler and sweet potato pecan pie.
