To the Almanack
August’s forecast according to the Hagerstown Town and Country Almanack calls for above average temperatures and precipitation that will be below average.
Weather Watch: The month opens, hazy, hot, humid (1-5); then fair, very warm (6,7), followed by showers, storms (8,9), but then fair, very warm days (10-13). It’s more showers, storms, though cooler (14,15)^ with a return to fair, pleasant days (16-19). Then more showers, storms (20,21) but fair skies, warm temperatures (2226). Look out for severe storms (2729), with the month ending on a fair, very warm note (30,31).
Tornado Watch: Beware of activity of this nature 14,15 and 27-29.
Full Moon: The month’s Full , Moon, frequently referred to as the Corn Moon by some, the Sturgeon and even Dog Moon by others, occurs at 1:52 a.m. e.d.t on the 28th.
Special Notes: As usual, the Dog Days which began on July 3rd, will end August 11 th.
Early in the month one can expect the annual appearance of the heavenly fireworks display of the Perseids. These so-called “shooting stars” at the rate of about one a minute at the height of the showers, are a result of the Earth passing through the tail of the comet Swift-Tuttle. They are usually more frequent during the early morning hours.
As the month ends, prepare to enjoy the Labor Day weekend, Labor Day being on Monday, Sept. 2nd.
The Garden: Keep after moisturerobbing weeds which also steal valuable nutrients from your vegetables and flowers. A good layer of mulch helps to retain moisture, keeps down weeds and makes the soil cooler during the hot, August days.
