Terrorism It has been quite a month. " First Flight 800 went down with all aboard in an explosion that was apparently caused by a bomb or missile. Then a bomb exploded in Centennial Park in Atlanta, one of the few unsecured spots near the 100th modem Olympic Games. The only thing these two events have in common is the attempt on the part of some people or organizations to make sure Americans feel threatened. The attempt was successful. It is tempting to believe that in Rappahannock County we are safe from terrorism. Apart from the obvious fact that citizens from Rappahannock County are airline pilots and flight attendants as well as airline travelers and sports fans, this sense of security is misplaced. Rappahannock County has its fair share of people who feel they have some grievance, those who share with terrorists a feeling that their lives do not make much of a difference unless they make some sort of violent “statement,” those who act out their frustrations under the influence of alcohol or other mood or mind altering drugs. The percentage of people who act on these feelings seems to be increasing here as well as elsewhere. More and more people-seem to be “trigger happy” whether their weapons of choice are guns, automobiles, brass knuckles or their yocal cords. While Rappahannock County itself does not seem to present much of a target for terrorists, random acts of violence can occur here as easily as other places, and Rappahannock citizens can become the targets of terrorists when they leave the county, as many do every day. It has been fascinating to observe through the national media the process of investigating these events and determining how they occurred and perhaps who perpetrated the crimes. The technology for such investigations is amazing.' However, in the long run it is not possible to lock up every person who might commit a violent act. The answer must lie in providing for everyone constructive means for expressing grievances. If everyone does not feel he or she has a stake in civilized society, there are no barriers that will make anyone ultimately safe.
Olympics The spirit of Olympic competition cannot be quelled by a bomb. It is possible to wonder why NBC has to turn every event it covers into a mini soap opera when many would prefer to see most as mere sporting events, without losing track of the fact that there is real drama here. Every athlete who competes at the highest international level has dedicated most of his or her recent life to the endeavor. Some are awarded with Olympic medals; most are not. All deserve the respect of those of us who pursue much more sedentary lives.
