Hazel Burke

Hazel Burke, 81, formerly of Amissville, died July 11 at Leewood Nursing Home in Annandale.

She was bom Dec. 24, 1914, in Bluemont and lived in Arlington for many years where at the early age of 15 began teaching Sunday School; •She was a member of Clorendon Baptist Church for 40 years where she taught the Mary Martha Bible Clas§ with sometimes as many as 100 adults in attendance.

Upon moving to Amissville in 1975 she again taught a class of young married couples at Amissville Baptist Church until after the death of her husband, Kirkwood Burke in 1979 moved to Centreville where she taught a women’s class at Centreville Baptist Church, until at the age of 75 had to undergo heart surgery.

She enjoyed music and was an enthusiastic gardener. The Burkes maintained a summer home in Piney Point* Maryland where family and friends vacationed every summer.

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Parisi of Burke and a son, Bradley Burke of Amissville; two sisters, Francis Funk and Ivy Warhurst; two brothers, Russell and Wheeler ' Santmyer; three grandsons and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held July 14 at Arlington Funeral Home in Arlington. Interment was at National Memorial Park in Falls Church.

Lena Atkins

Lena Mae Jenkins Atkins, 89, of Culpeper, died Friday, July 26 at Culpeper Health Care Center.

She was born in Rappahannock County, on Oct. 1, 1916, the daughter of the late Ben Jenkins and Ackie Dodson Jenkihs. She was the wife of the late, Oakley J. Atkins.

Mrs. Atkins was retired from Southern Garment and a member of Culpeper Baptist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Mildred “Millie” Ryder and her husband, Eugene Ryder of Culpeper,

Eye Witness

At Washing

The Washington Baptist Church is pleased to present the Virginia Baptist Student Union Summer Missions Program and invites all to attend. The program, “Eye Witness” will be held at 7 each evening Aug. 4-7.

There will be a covered dish dinner served at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 4.

The six committed Christians who make up this special ministry team have dedicated the use of their performing arts gifts to God this summer
