Contributing Writer » When you’re in your early twenties and in the exciting process of running away to get married, the farthest thing from your mind is what you’ll be doing when you’re in your early eighties. Funny thing, though, it doesn’t seem like sixty years ago. Time goes fast when you’re having fun.

I’d be stretching the truth a bit if I said “it seems like yesterday,” but it’s still my favorite “long term” memory. I remember when Virginia Vass, already a “professional” radio actress and lead soprano for the new NBC Network and Bob Scott, promising juvenile of the Broadway stage,, drove, without air conditioning, from Hollywood through the desert to Yuma, Ariz. on Aug. 17, 1938. We woke up the first Baptist minister we could find who conducted the ceremony in his nightshirt, covered by his Sunday frock coat and, with his wife playing the portable organ and his daughter as witness, made it legal for us to become “Mr. and Mrs. Scott.” We even had a wedding feast, liver and
