Havura Ktana announces that Marvin Caplan writer and Yiddishist will be the speaker at its Sept. 13 meeting. The theme of the program will be “The Joy of Yiddish!”
At one time Yiddish was spoken by 11 million Jews around the world. It is an amalgam of several languages: 70 percent German of the middle ages, 20 percent Hebrew and 10 percent other languages.
Between 1886 and 1925 two and a half million Jews came to the United States from Russia and Eastern Europe — and their primary language was Yiddish. In New York City, primarily, but also in large cities like Philadelphia and Chicago Yiddish thrived — with a total of 21 Yiddish theaters and five Yiddish dailies, including the well known Forward.
