jacked the schoolhouse up and put in an under-story addition. They also built a cupola on the top to create natural air conditioning.
The original flooring remains— sanded and refinished—in the four rooms and hall. The chalkboards remain along with the school bell. They kept the overall structure in its original form.
The bottom floor of the twostory building is the new addition which has a large room, an additional classroom and a kitchen.
Hoffman said they are going to use the newly renovated 5,500 square foot schoolhouse for weddings, events, workshops, classes for children and adults. She said it was also available to people in the community to rent.
The schoolhouse was painted to match the other buildings on their property: pale yellow, brick red, blue and cream.
“The colors make it fun. Mike was our color person,” said Hoffman who pointed to the old tool shed which was also repainted. “Mike decided it needed to match.”
Hoffman and Biniek have had a fair share of practice when it comes to renovating.
