OF DEATH On the banks of the Ganges River sits the ancient city of Varanasi, where the elderly and the sick arrive from across India to pass their final days praying at the river. This is done with the knowledge that dying on the banks of the Ganges will speed them through the cycles of rebirths to moksha, or liberation of the soul. And those who do not die in Varanasi desire to be cremated there or to have their ashes scattered in the river. In this tradition, cremation is an education for everyone. It prompts people to think about the meaning of their own lives. At the end of a life, only deeds remain. Earthly trappings do not survive the flames.
