Stephen Dowell III, a Castleton resident and student at Wakefield Country Day School for the past nine years, gave the salutatorian address at the school’s 24th commencement on June 1.
The graduation ceremony was held in the Senior Garden, on one of the few afternoons in the past two months in which there was an absence of rain. In Dowell’s remarks he stressed, among other things, the importance of service. Dowell graduated magna cum laude, with an Advanced Classical Diploma. He will be attending the University of Georgia in the fall.
A First Honors student , Dowell was also the recipient of the school’s Mathematics Award, which is given to the student in an advanced math course who has achieved the highest final grade point average. He also received the Greek Award, presented to the student who “has achieved excellent grades in Greek and is supportive of the ideals of the classics.”
Maureen Dale of Luray was Wakefield’s valedictorian, and her speech marked the culmination of 12 years of study at WCDS. Dale graduated summa cum laude, with an Advanced Classical Diploma. She will be attending the University of Virginia in the fall. A First Honors student, she was the recipient of Wakefield’s Economics Award and the Pamela Lynn Leadership Award for “consistently demonstrating, through personal example, the qualities of a leader."
