The Spitfire 16-under girls softball team won the 15-team Summer Clash tournament in Chester, Va. last weekend. By winning the championship, 54, over Zero Tolerance of Madison County, the Spitfire qualified for the 16-under USSSA World Series this summer in Michigan.
The Spitfire consists of Rachael Clark, Mandy Reed and Kim Olinger from Liberty High, and Molly Burke, Rachel Gall, Lara Kreyling and Brittany Thornhill from Rappahannock County High.
The rest of the 13-member team includes Ashley Ballentine, Tiffany Walker and Jessica Patton from Warren County High; Jamie Gallahan and Jamie Oliver from Orange County High; and Catelyn Renninger from Stafford High.
The coaches are Billy Reed, Danny Olinger, Terry Millner ancTClint Propst.
After losing two of three on Saturday, the Spitfire faced a daunting task, but won all four games Sunday: at 10:30 a.m., and 1:30, 3 and 4:30 p.m.
For Liberty players Rachael Clark and Mandy Reed, the tournament win was doubly sweet as they faced off twice against current Eagle teammate Mandy Selvage, who pitches for the Virginia Comets.
“She’s my buddy,” Reed said. “But when you’re up to bat you have to stay focused and not look at her.”
Selvage outdueled the Spitfire on the opening day, 21, but the Spitfire got revenge when it counted, eliminating the Comets 4-2, with Selvage again on the mound.
Clark rocked her friend and teammate with a double and a triple, as the Spitfire came back to win. Reed also came up with a big hit.
