Photos courtesy ot Richard Lykes Two brass plaques were installed Sunday on the f ont wall of the historic Mt. Salem Baptist Church on Long Mountain Road in a dedication ceremony. One plaque is from the National Register of Historic Places, the other from the Virginia Landmarks Register.The Rev. Phil Bailey of the Washington Baptist Church holds one of the plaques while Bill Welcfi installs one from his ladder. Arland Welch of the Rappahannock County Historical Society supervises placement of the plaques. The church was the meeting house of a small Baptist congregation of only 12 people in 1824. The building has brick and stucco walls two feet thick. The plaques were commissioned by the Washington Baptist Church. In 1873, the present Washington Baptist Church was organized as a branch of the Mt. Salem church and was built in Washington to provide a place of worship for residents of the county seat.
