film version of the Broadway musical about murder, showbiz and corruption in the 1920s Chicago mixes fabulous song and dance numbers with narrative. Oscars for Best Picture and to Zeta-Jones for Best Supporting Actress; 13 nominations in all.
• Sept. 5: “Finding Nemo” (G, 104 minutes) Animated, with the voices of Albert Brooks, Ellen DeGeneres and Willem Dafoe, “Finding Nemo” is another miracle of computer animation. Nemo is the sole surviving offspring of a clownfish. On his first day of school he swims into open water beyond the reef and is captured by a diver and added to a dental-office aquarium. Escape and rescue make this tale exciting, funny and deeply touching.
• Sept. 19: “Bruce Almighty” (PG-13, 94 minutes) Starring Jim Carrey and Jennifer Aniston, Carrey plays a Buffalo television reporter, Bruce Nolan, who’s stuck doing tacky, humane interest stories and yearning to be an anchorman. Convinced the world exists only to be unfair to him, Nolan pulls an on-air tantrum, gets fired and rails at God, prompting the Deity to call a private meeting with him.
