According to the Energy Information Administration, rates statewide in Virginia went up .16 percent between April. 2008 and April 2009. Allegheny Power - which currently services much of Rappahannock - received approval for another six percent increase in May of this year.
However, some see* it as added incentive to cut back.
Berm Olson who owns and runs an antique store in Flint Hill called Flint Hill Vintage, said her initial reaction was to think about ways to cut back on electric usage
"I use* a lot of lights in the store* and I was thinking about ways to cut back on the lighting." she said. Lighting was important to her business, she said, and it is difficult to see where changes could be made
“Can I cut back on electricity at all." asked Olson
Most also think that the increases won’t stop
“It will go higher up yet," said Mabel Dodson of Sperryville while dropping some things off at the sharing shed at the Flat wood collection center
Fred Brown of Amissville agreed.
“It’s bad. but I don't think it’s going to stop," said Brown who owns his own sign-making business, and while he’s seen a drastic drop in his own sales, higher rates hurt even more
