Bette and Mike Mahoney volunteered an out building on their Little Washington property to two trombone players during the festival. They’ve also attended some of the performances and were excited by the festival’s proximity to their home.
“It’s really nice to have it here and it’s a big undertaking. I wanted to make it easier for the Castleton folks,” said Bette. “There's something wonderful about getting in your car and driving five minutes away and hearing this world-class music without causing any traffic.”
Karen Liot-Hill worked as the volunteer coordinator for the festival. She was impressed by the efforts of the Rappahannock community.
“It’s been an honor to be a part of this project and being a part of the community of Rappahannock County has been an even bigger honor,” she said. “The festival has gone really well, given that it was the first year. We didn't know what to expect, so we were able to be responsive and learn lessons for next year! We can expect an even better festival next year.”
Until then, there is still a lot going on this week on Castleton Farm, including performances from Thursday to Sunday of Benjamin Britten’s “Beggar's Opera," as well as his “Albert Herring”
There is a free Symphonic Concert on Thursday at 11 a.m. featuring some of the young conductors Maestro Maazel is training as part of the Lorin Maazel—Rolex Master Classes. There are free cabaret performances on Saturday and Sunday in between the operas.
Other events include Robert Langevin, The New York Philharmonic's superb principal flute performing a program of sonatas by Gaubert. Lowell Liebermann and Faure.
The festival concludes on Sunday, with a Symphonic Concert featuring the music of Verdi, Tchaikovsky, ?Bntten,
