According to researcher John Tole, in the days before Lowe’s, Home Depot, the Coop, and even the local hardware store, hand tools were often one-of-a-kind devices fabricated by the local blacksmith or farmer to ease the effort associated with whatever task might be at hand.
Attendees at a July 8 program — sponsored by the Rappahannock Historical Society in the Town Hall - were both amazed and awestruck by the ingenuity of the handiwork of these bygone tool smiths.
Mark and Gary Bauserman of Page County have inherited and collected a remarkable group of old tools. They brought with them a small fraction of their collection and talked about the function, or occasionally the mystery, of these old implements.
