Rappahannock County residents often choose the services of the two nursing homes in Warrenton. One ranked “average’ in a new government rating system, but the other didn’t fare so well.
Oak Springs of Warrenton earned only one star, a “much below average" rating. The Fauquier Health Rehabilitation and Nursing Center (FHRNC), formerly known as The Overlook, received three stars.
The star rating system is the brainchild of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and is designed to simplify the process of choosing a nursing home, of which there are more than 15,000 nationally.
CMS revamped the system in December.
Five stars means a facility is “much above average,” but even with five stars, site visits are strongly recommended before any decisions are made. The site, www.medicare.gov, gets 50.000 hits per day, but the star rating system has its , weaknesses and critics.
The ratings are on a bellcurve, so it is strictly a tool for comparison. In other words, 20 percent of the nursing homes will be one-star, and 20 percent
