“There would be $30 million in savings if they just went back to doing things the way they were done before,” said Gilbert.
VDOT already has installed signs notifying drivers that the rest areas are closed. The department will also remove several “No Parking” signs at the remaining 23 rest areas and welcome centers to provide more than 225 legal truck parking spaces. This will offset the total number of truck parking spaces* lost at the closed facilities, according to the agency.
