perm and using paper bags to make ringlets. Carolyn also remembers the dress code — no pants allowed. In the winter the girls would wear pants under their skirts on the bus and then roll them up when they arrived at school.
All students recalled several disciplinary techniques used by Quaintance. Foremost among them were memories of paddling with the “board of education,” a long board with several round holes, which was apparently used with some regularity. For those students whose language was offensive, Quaintance made them brush their mouths with soap, adding a touch of bleach for those who were remarkably offensive.
In the face of discipline techniques no longer used today, it is particularly significant that all former students spoke of their principal, who filled the roles of coach, teacher, nurse, social worker, disciplinarian and mother-substitute, with the greatest of affection and respect. It was clear from these former students that the personal interest she took in all students and the relationship she formed with them was paramount in their memories.
Closing of school
Construction of new schools led to the closing of the Sperryville School in June 1967, and by the time Cliff Miller bought it in the late 1960s, the grounds housed trash dumpsters and the building was filled with rats.
As he and Maurice O’Bannon planned to start up the Sperryville Emporium they were met with skepticism: “People said the business would not fly. The building was too far off the road and no one would drive that far off the road to get to the building,” according to Cliff Miller.
The rest, of course, is history and the Emporium became a successful business landmark for over 25 years,
