‘‘Cancer is a cell that obeys no physiological or- biological laws. They penetrate normal cells, take their food, and destroy them. Why cells do that we do not know.’’
The speaker declared that it is no more disgraceful to have cancer than it is to have tuberculosis,’ pneumonia, heart trouble or any other disease. He expressed the belief that if more publicity were given to the causes of people’s deaths when they die of cancer great impetus wo-jld be given tov the program for cancer control.
Dr. Fisher discussed briefly the seven cancer danger signals: sores and ulcers that do not heal readily, rapidly discoloring or growing moles or warts, indigestion that does not respond to proper treatment and diet, and lasts longer than two weeks, hoarseness, protracted coughs with blood-tinged sputum, unusual secretions and changes in bowel habits.
Skin cancers are the most curable of all cancers, the doctor -.aid, pointing out that 98 per cent of them can be cured. Between the ages of 35 and 55 more women have cancer than men, but after 55 more men die with it. If discovered early, cancer is one of the most curable of all diseases.
Dr. Fisher warned against drugs and salves as “cures” for cancer. There are only three things that cure cancer—surgery, X-ray and radium.
“You have a great message of hope to carry back in this campaign,” Dr. Fisher asserted. He based his statement on the fact that all types of scientists are combined to solve the cancer problem as they have never been united before.
