He was born near Pope’s Creek, in Westmoreland county.

He was an American soldier and statesman and a president of the United States.

In 1748 he set out to cross the Blue Ridge mountains, work his way up the Valley of the Shenandoah, and survey the vast Fairfax estates.

In 1753 lie was appointed lieutenant-colonel of Virginia’s military forceFrom

1754 to 1757 he commanded all the Virginia forces.

On July 3, 1775, standing under the historic elm, he took command of the Continental Army at Cambridge.
