Flower Exhibit
Mrs. J. G. Revercomb had a very interesting flower arrangment at the Rappahannock flower exhibit Saturday. The arrangment was of all fall flowers in the deep colors of fall, Mrs. Revercomb used Bronze Canna leaves, deep orange and yellow Marigolds and, Zinnias and Bronze Dalles.
This arrangement was used in a bread tray presented to Mrs. Revercomb’s grandmother, Mrs. Joshua Hudson about 150 years ago by a slave, Jack Johnson, wno made the tray and presented to Mrs. Hudson on Christmas, Mrs. Revercomb won the blue ribbon on her flower exhibit, she also won other prizes which consisted of an electric iron, Pressure cooker, a clock and several dollars in cash.
She also won five blue ribbons, two red and two white ribbons on different exhibits she had at the fair.
Mulch Studied As Weed
Control In Planting
Studies to test the value -of mulch in weed control in ornamental plants are underway at Virginia Agricultural Experiment Station.
Associate Horticulturist A. G. Smith says that shavings were applied four inches deep,' and that in one area which has been weeded only once in 12 months the crop is fairly clean and has made excellent growth. In order to flff‘ set the? loss $T hitrogen where we mulch was applied, nitrate of soda was used at the rate of about 100 pounds per acre, in addition to a light side dressing of 5-10-5 fertilizer.
