ivory-billed woodpeckers, America’s rarest birds, and now the government is establishing a sanctuary for them, announces the National Audubon Society.
This bears study. There are some rare birds in Rappahannock, and some of them are tough enough to make ivory bills seem like jelly. It is not wise, however, to say that sanctuaries are to 'be established. That pounds as \t you were encouraging these birds, and they need no more encouragement. The varieties of rare birds that exist in Rappahannock are so many that it would require a new method of classification. There is the variety that loves to tease—goodness knows 1 that Va« . riety needs no' encouragement! There is'the variety that loves to tell tall tales, and the only reason to establish a sanctuary for them would be to relieve the rest of the Citizens of having to listen. There is the variety that enjoys furnishing the basis of the tales that othtefs tell-—and, mercy on us! don’t do anything to encourage them!
Yes, sir, Florida is not the only state with rare birds. The main difference seems to be that the people .down there have just discovered them, and Rappahannock has known all along that there were many rare birds in the county—then, too, Rappahannocjc is not planning any means to preserve them for posterity.
