People and Music

Just as music is made by people, so people are made by music. For music can create in those who hear it a “clean heart” and renew -within them a “right spirit”. Music grows out of life. Music in turn can help life to grow happier and more expressive.

A beloved American scholar, Dr. Henry Van Dyke, when asked “why the world needle musty” gave this memorable answer:

“Good music seems to me the expression of the lofty soul, the trained intelylect, and the disciplined emotions. When I hea£ beautiful music I am carried out' of myself . . . into a region of beauty and sublimity which has a divine order. Music contributes so much to the higher joy of life, the higher understanding. We should remember the words of the poet Wordsworth: ‘Without pleasure we really do not know how to understand anything.’ Music is a wonderful opener of the heart. In music we do not want to be moved by mere physical sensations but by emotions regular and eontroll- 1 ed by the deep laws of melody and harmony.” •-*«'* ~

Van Dyke really sums up the story of peojrie and music in bis fine lines: • ■ - -'V'x ■
