These airborne spores are not capable of infecting new grain in the spring but they infest barberry bushes, and the spring stage of the rust develops on the leaves. Spores from diseased barberry levee infect grain and grass plants nearby. Once this stage is established, rust spreads by means of wind-borne spores from plant to plant and from field to field. The .elimination of barberry bushes breaks the cycle of rust development and controls the disease.
